Sello Mmakau, CIO at Home Affairs

Sello Mmakau, CIO at Home Affairs, believes resilience to high levels of stress and ability to balance politics and professionalism is imperative for one to be successful in their careers.

He acquired an MBL in addition to other courses, including education, commerce and IT. "I continued to study internationally recognised IT technical courses, preparing myself to be a successful IT technician or engineer."

My job makes a positive difference in the lives of ordinary citizens through the use of technologies.

He won the Visionary CIO 2012 title, and sees this as one of the key milestones in his career.

Mmakau, says as a senior manager or an executive, one must understand critical aspects of business and human factors. "My job brings new challenges every day, and with this the demand for methods and new technologies to improve the running of Home Affairs. I use research and constantly study or attend international conferences to help understand the infl uence technology has currently and in future, on day-to-day operations of the organisation."

Mmakau says he also learns from how other developed countries implement advanced technologies for best practices.

He advises those who wish to go the same professional route to be determined, committed and hard working. They must understand the stress of the position, and be willing to work overtime to meet targets and deadlines.
